She Used My Own Voodoo Against Me

Last Tuesday I was stuck in an airport when my virtual assistant contacted me.

“Dear Sir do you have an affiliate program? If not you should get one because I am getting a lot of emails asking for it.”

With that I was hooked.

I always listen to what my third world employees tell me to do.

Actually a bunch of people have been asking for a program for years.

I’ve listened, I’ve agreed.

But I’m lazy.

So I contacted Judy Kettenhofen my membership site guru.

The conversation (like all of mine) went something like this:

“Judy people are asking for an affiliate program. I need one but I have no idea how to do one so get me one while I’m on vacation and let me know how much.”

Unlucky for me she was on Skype.

Here is how the conversation went:

Tim Castleman: I am getting blasted for an affiliate program for all my products. Lets get one put together so I can do it when I get back. Get me a price and I’ll follow your lead. I have RAP, Synerwhatever. We can use whatever we want.

Judy Kettenhofen: Okay — do you have a list of your products ?

Tim Castleman: They are all on my FTP server but no I don’t. I am bad, I know – I know

Judy Kettenhofen: So you want me to research what all your products are and add it to my bill?

Tim Castleman: you’re going to hurt me aren’t you?

Judy Kettenhofen: how can I give you a quote when you don’t know how many products there are?, what kind they are?, and pulling all the pieces together ?

Tim Castleman: I am sure there are at least 10 products

Judy Kettenhofen: okay — MOST of them are like just 1 sales page, 1 download, right ?

Judy Kettenhofen: okay 10 products — I’ll even FIND them for you, set them up in RAP, etc. — for $X each — how’s that sound ?

Tim Castleman: expensive

Lets stop here for a second before we get into the real meat and potatoes. So Judy has done great work for my membership site, she has the knowledge, the skill, and the talent to get this done. I am pretty much at her mercy. Yes there are other people out there BUT I want her to do it because of her track record of success and her knowledge of my business. Ok back to the conversation.

Judy Kettenhofen: think of it (the price) in terms of how much you make per product …  and how much more you’ll make when you have affiliates promoting them …

Judy Kettenhofen: (LOL, I’m just using what I learned.  Am I good student ?)

Long story short I am going to cut an expensive check and in a few days I’ll have an affiliate program.

That’s not the point of this point.

The point is that she used my own damn sales tactics against me to make me give her money!!!

Look how she did it.

“Tim your affiliate program isn’t an expense, it’s an investment. Don’t think of money you have to put out to get it done – think about all the money you’re going to make.”

I was dead in the water before I even knew what hit me. How could I argue with her. She’s 100% right.

Once the affiliate program people are going to sign up and promote me. I’ll make back my initial investment back quickly (I hope). Best of all this is going to be 90% done for me. Very little input on my end (which means it will get done faster).

So what makes this sales interaction worth mentioning?

Nothing – EXCEPT the fact that this is EXACTLY how 90% of my conversations go with my online and offline clients.

They want something done, but they don’t want to do it.

They don’t want to spend money if it is an expense but they are willing to INVEST in their business (especially if you can show them how quickly they can get that investment back).

If you can make it hands off or done for them they’ll be even more willing to hand you the keys to the kingdom.

Look if this can work on a guy who sells other people products and services for a living then it can work for Mom & Pop Anywhere.

So read the conversation above again, look carefully how Judy framed and overcame my price objections and then feel free to comment or ask any questions below and I’ll do my best to answer them.

Tim

  8. Yes. Yes. Yes! Some of the most successful IM’er’s make 75% of their income from having this as a backend to all or most of their own products. Thanks for reminding us all. Samrt move BTW. I am currently setting up an affiliate program for a product I just created.
